In OoE you use the same fast weapon with high DPS and easy attack cancels until you encounter an enemy that takes almost no damage from that specific weapon. In Dawn and Portrait it feels like you had more effective options for combat, the weapon variety was more meaningful and backdash cancelling required more skill to perform effectively if you wanted better DPS with slow weapons. Also most glyphs are just bad or quickly become obsolete by straight up improvements. There is almost no reason to stand around hitting enemies and risk getting damaged. It was easier and faster, not to mention less risky because good healing items aren't easily accessed in OoE. After a while I just ended up jumping over enemies and avoiding every single encounter.

Any other strategy is rendered useless in comparison. The skill expression is definitely lacking because almost every single enemy encounter boils down to "switch to their weakness and whale on them with animation cancel mashing until they die." It feels very restrictive and tedious. The level design towards the end of the game doesn't make up for it either imo. When you aren't running in a literal straight line there are many moments where I will simply forget where I am because the game isn't memorable, there are rarely any landmarks and it reuses rooms with similar geometry too often. It ruins the flow and kills any semblance of immersion while "exploring." You would expect the game to have a more concise flow since it is by far the most linear metroidvania but it actually has the worst. Everything about the game feels so scattered and disconnected.

There is also way too much warping, whether it be with magical tickets to go to the village or the teleporters in the linear levels. It is very linear but doesn't come close to any of the classicvanias level of intensity. The level design feels incredibly repetitive and rarely ever creates engaging moments with its platforming and enemy placement. It is fine but playing it feels like a chore to me. I really want to love it because there are many cool aspects of the game and I love Castlevania, but it is just not my jam. I don't think OoE is BAD, that is a bit harsh, but it is honestly my least favorite of the metroidvanias and I share your sentiment.
